Officially listed as Season 1, Episode 11, A Midwinter’s Tale, is more than just a Holiday special, but one of the best episodes from the show thus far. Not only do we get to see a new, fabulous hairstyle for Prudence, and a better look at Sabrina’s Sable Locks, this was one of the best-written episodes of the first season.

There’s a ‘Monster of the week’ and a strange ally as we meet with the sinister Bartell and a Mountain Witch who collects orphans, but where The Midwinter’s Tale shines is illuminating the pagan origins of “traditional” Christmas fare. The Yule Log is meant to burn through the entirety of the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, to protect a household from malicious spirits and how Christmas is the best time for ghost stories. It’s nice to not have a Krampus based Holiday special, for once. (Check out the similarities between The Venture Brothers – “A Very Venture Christmas” from 2004 and the Supernatural S3 episode 8, “A Very Supernatural Christmas” from 2007 for a real deep dive)

What the episode unintentionally explains, is, all the rest of Season 1 of The Chilling Tales of Sabrina, take place just in November. Sabrina becomes one of the most powerful witches in Greendale, in just a couple of weeks. Contextually that also means, Sabrina unintentionally resurrected Harvey’s brother, for Thanksgiving, and that’s a bit awkward…, and this episode strains their currently very complicated relationship further, as she gives Harvey a gift of enchanted color pencils, that the tips never wear down. A benign enough gift, which, any doodler would love, but Harvey has been burned by magic before, and no matter how great a present that is, H-Man is deep in his Muggle-Life, zero Magics for him.

Sabrina also brews an Eggnog, she gifts to Harvey’s father, that cures him of his alcoholism, by souring his taste for it. Harvey had told our Teenage Witch, that since the whole Zombie Brother thing, Dad had been hitting the sauce pretty hard, and Sabrina not telling Harvey or his dad the eggnog would change him, is a real, unintended, betrayal of trust. Despite her Phenomenal Power, she’s got to learn to be more responsible, she can’t just Magic everyone’s problems away, and that looks like it can be a real problem going on in future episodes.

On the BFF Front, Susie got a job to Die for, Rosalind uses her Cunning to be a human bloodhound for the C story and Ambrose isn’t given enough to do in the episode, Salem also just sits guard over baby Leticia.

I don’t want to give TOO much away, you should go watch it for yourself!

The episode is already on Netflix!!! They’re THAT FAST!
