Party of Five is getting a reboot with a new spin to the classic story of a family dealing with life without their parents. The reboot will follow the five Acosta children as they navigate daily life struggles to survive as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported back to Mexico.

The reboot comes from Amy Lippman and Chris Keyser, who worked on the original 1994 series, and with Rodrigo Garcia as executive producer and Michal Zebede as co-executive producer and writer.

Lippman wanted to reboot the series, but waited until the right time, especially during the political climate surrounding DACA, Dreamers, and the issues surrounding the borders.

“It’s real,” said Lippman during the TCA Winter Press Tour on Tuesday. “It’s happening every day and when we did the original Party of Five, those dead parents stayed dead. The fact never changed. The thing that excites us is that the parents are still there. How do we try to parent when they aren’t there.”

Keyser said the series will be different from the original and the stories will change as the character develops. it will never stay in one place.

“What came before and what is new,” said Keyser. “I think for us, it’s a show about grief. This show is about grief in a slightly different way… What does it mean as a group of kids who had to think of themselves but got to think about each other… The most interesting is the relationship between these kids and what is happening is present and changing.”

As for the political aspect of the series, Lippman assures the audience that it’s not a political drama.

“Our goal is “what do these people experience?”, said Lippman. “I don’t think we want to go in with a strong political agenda. We want to go into what is the experience of the character.”

The series has been picked up for 10-episodes and stars Brandon Larracuente as Emilio, Emily Tosta as Lucia, Niko Guardado as Beto, and Elle Paris Legaspi as Valentina. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television.
