Beyond the blood and over the top violence, Zombie Army 4: Dead War is what every game is intended to be at its core…fun. Rebellion’s undead shooting gallery just uses the summer popcorn blockbuster method.

The year is 1946. Europe lies in ruins, torn apart by the nefarious “Plan Z.” A brave band of heroes cast the Führer into hell but little do they know … Hitler’s Hordes are back for more! Face the darkness in singleplayer or team up with friends as you blast your way through Nazi undead in this spine-chilling shooter from the makers of Sniper Elite 4.

At E3 2019, we got a healthy portion of hands-on gameplay. The game didn’t waste any time highlighting its strengths. Within seconds of jumping in, a massive train loaded with Nazi zombies attacked our fort. Players find themselves in an all out war with the undead. Choosing one of four characters, you’ll dive in equipped with auto weapons and long range rifles. Firing rounds from your sniper rifle also randomly triggers Rebellion’s signature X-ray kill cam. As with Sniper Elite, you’ll watch a bullet brutally destroy enemies anatomy.

Zombie Army doesn’t simply rely on bang bang, each of the characters has unique abilities to help in combat. During our demo, we found our character could go into bullet time utilizing her Thompson style machine gun and enter a hyper focus with the sniper rifle that fired off an extra damage round at the enemy. Once you run out of bullets, if you can’t reload, you’ll also have the option to charge and take down zombies. It’s almost Mortal Kombat like when you see these characters disembowel enemies.

Even though WWII and alternative history have been done to death in the media, Zombie Army doesn’t care. The unapologetic approach to junk food entertainment serves it well. Seemingly endless hordes give you an incredible feeling of tension as your ammo begins to dwindle. Just in the nick of time moments happened throughout the demo, no only in battle but as well as when the repetition of enemies started to become noticeable. When we get tired of the run of the mill zombie soldiers the game introduced kamikaze versions of the undead. Even when we get the hang of taking those down, an even bigger flame thrower zombie got introduced.

Zombie Army 4: Dead Army is THE answer to the question “Why haven’t I played Zombie Army 1-3?” The game simply felt like something worth playing and from our conversation with the development team seems like we’re getting more of what made this series great. Best of all if you’ve never played any of these games before there’s very little fence. It could end up being the video game equivalent of a used Lexus. Something shiny with good performance but still been around the block a time or two.

Zombie Army 4: Dead Army launches early 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store PC.
