Mysteries Decoded investigates Area 51 on September 10th

About this episode: In 1947, the United States Army Air Force issued a press release to the Roswell Daily Record claiming that they had recovered a ‘flying saucer’ near Roswell, New Mexico. The following day, before the world could react to the astonishing news, the Army issued a retraction stating that the ‘flying saucer’ was nothing more than a weather balloon. But rather than end the story, the retraction sparked an on-going belief by many that the government may be covering up the discovery of a UFO from another world.

Armed with what may be the first new evidence in the case in 70 years, Investigator Jennifer Marshall and Ufologist Ryan Sprague have launched an inquiry to uncover the truth.  Marshall and Sprague visit the secretive Roswell crash site where mysterious metal debris was recently discovered. They initiate tests to see if these metal pieces may in fact be “other worldly.” In addition, Marshall and Sprague use modern photo analysis techniques to decipher an old, obscure memo held by a powerful General during a staged photo shoot. Could the answers to the Roswell mystery be held in plain sight in his hands? Something happened in Roswell in 1947, and now Marshall and Sprague are trying to figure out what, exactly, that was.

The Interview

We have had a long relationship with Jennifer both as a host and actor and yes, you have seen her on TV shows like “Stranger Things,” “Hawaii 5-0,” “Game Shakers” and so many more… we wanted to officially find out more about how Jennifer thinks and share it with you. Check out our interview below and let us know if you have any questions that you think we should have asked… and maybe we will find out for you (wink).

What drove you to following this path, using both your experience in the Military and your pursuit of getting your investigative license to going after these tough to solve mysteries?

For me, I’ve always had a drive to help people. Private Investigation is a field where we solve problems, we make people’s lives easier, we bring closure. That was always important to me. To have a job where I can make a difference. The show is unique because in my practice, I would never be paid to investigate historical events–who would pay the bill? So it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in this capacity and share it with an engaged audience.

Which of the mysteries that you have investigated (and have aired) stumped you? Or at least, left you dumfounded, you know, you didn’t find enough evidence to prove it but not enough to disprove it. How do you make these determinations?

Mothman was incredibly frustrating for me. I do believe that people saw something at first. If you look at all of the witness accounts, there are alarming similarities, even when the police separated couples to write their own accounts. Immediately I thought it was a man in a suit trying to scare people. But in one of the incidents, the people who came across this “Mothman creature,” threatened to shoot it/him and the creature did not move. Now, this is a part of the country and an era where people carried firearms far more often than they do now. If someone was in a costume and feared for his life, he would have spoken out, ripped off the mask, etc. Also, the movements of this creature could not have been done by a man in a suit. So, it’s intriguing. I don’t know what it was originally but I can’t just dismiss it outright because the fact is we don’t know. Later sightings are not as precise so I evaluate each one on a case-by-case basis. I also think because of the hysteria of Mothman, it became the default for anything a person could not explain.

You are a very direct investigator, which is refreshing, how are your fans who are into these mysteries accepting your findings?

I think many people can appreciate I just get down to business and demand the proof. The most blowback (and it has been minimal) comes from true believers in whatever field we are looking at. I don’t come into any of this with preconceived notions or with a bias. My co-hosts are generally passionate about what we are looking at, so I allow them to be the voice for that community. I will say however…I have been surprised by some of the things we have uncovered. I am more open-minded than most people think.

Who comes up with the list of mysteries considered for your episodes and can you tell us about the ground work you do before going into the field?

Our executive producers compile a list of possible topics and run them by me. There are some I was more passionate about and a few I was not interested in that we ended up not doing. It’s very much a team effort and I think that has lead to some great topics. Any good television is about collaboration, and over this past year, we’ve become a little family. We work together at least 12 hours a day and travel all over the US, so you have to like who you work with. As far as pre-production, the ground work is extensive. It’s not just me researching, it is the series producer, the segment producer, and a team of researchers. There is no way to cover that much ground when you shoot a new episode every two weeks. And it’s better to have multiple people researching. You’ll find different sources. I’m a fan of collaboration.

How are you received by the local “mystery believers” when you are investigating the materials and share your questions / feedback with them?

Overall, people just want to be heard. I am open to listening to people and their opinions, views, or experiences. I do end a good number of conversations with agreeing to disagree, but compassion costs nothing. There are a good number of Decoders who tune in every week and join my live tweet session, and they’re incredible. I love sharing information that maybe didn’t make the episode due to time restrictions or some behind-the-scenes photos or even bloopers! We are all human and sometimes there are really funny moments on set. So I like sharing with the engaged audience.

What are your super powers? What are your top five super powers as an investigator?

1. Attention to detail
2. Reading people
3. Finding (and sometimes interviewing) sources others have missed
4. Interviewing
5. Becoming a chameleon to fit in to whatever environment I’m in

Who/what has influenced you and your career path?

As a child, I loved Robert Stack and Unsolved Mysteries. I felt that he was bringing light to cases that otherwise wouldn’t get press and I found his delivery to be compassionate and not exploitative. I would love to do a show in the future where we investigate missing persons or unsolved murders, because those families deserve closure. They need help to determine what happened to their loved one.

What do you say to people about their conspiracy theories when you see them shared socially or those who present them to you for a response?

I think there are many conspiracy theories that are silly, especially with how quickly information spreads in this day and age. I think there are others based on truth, but end up getting muddled. Lastly, it’s clear that there are things the government has hidden from the general public so I will never say there is no legitimate conspiracy. I just try to judge each case on its own merit.

About Jennifer Marshall
I am a wife and a mother and I have my film career, so I’m a busy gal. I’m most proud of the volunteer work I do. Advocating on behalf of veterans and serving that community is first and foremost to me. I’m passionate about changing the narrative of veterans in the media and want a more balanced and accurate portrayal of those who have served this nation. This show has been a great boon to show that people can serve, honorably separate and go on to have a fulfilling career afterwards. Veterans are an asset to society–leaders in the community, coaches, teachers, Mayors. It’s important to see that side as well. Career wise, I have some TV shows and films coming out this year that I can’t disclose just yet, but stay tuned to my social media, because I always post there first. 🙂
