Today, Sony has announced they will be delaying the Thursday reveal of PlayStation 5 games. The event announced just a few days ago already had the gaming world eagerly waiting to put down pre-order money for the new console scheduled to release later this year. There’s no word on when Sony will reschedule the event but the reason behind the postponement should be noted.

Over the course of the past couple of days. Peaceful protesting has been happening all across the county and in London over the killing of George Floyd by the actions and inactions of Minneapolis police officers.

For unconfirmed reasons, some of those protests morphed into rioting and random acts of violence that’s not likely to slow down in the next few days. In the time before Covid-19 opened the public’s eyes as to just how little you can rely on government systems to protect the public, it wouldn’t have been unheard of for companies and entertainment conglomerates to operate with a business as usual mentality. It’s clear now that disenfranchised people are fed up with the fear of being killed by police while doing normal everyday activities such as jogging, bird watching, even sleeping in their own beds simply because of the color of their skin. The first step is the acknowledgement of the problem and hopefully, more companies will follow and help pave the way for discourse in policy change at governmental levels.

We’ve waited this long for a new generation of console gaming, a few days is a small price to pay for more important matters to be addressed in public discourse. EA has also delayed its unveil of Madden 21 for the same reasons as Sony’s event.
