The historic Supreme Court case that overturned Proposition 8 is getting the documentary treatment, courtesy of HBO Documentary Films.
It was announced Tuesday by Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, that the monumental court case that overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriage, will be turned into a documentary feature that will debut on HBO in 2014.
The Story Behind the Case
Directors Ben Cotner and Ryan White collected footage from the last five years documenting the case as it unfolded, leading up to the landmark Supreme Court decision. The documentary will tell the story of those behind the case and their struggle for marriage equality—not just for California residents, but for all same-sex couples across the country.
The film will focus on the legal team behind the case, led by Bush v. Gore opposing counsel Ted Olson and David Boies, who represented two couples, Kris Perry and Sandy Sier, and Jeffrey Zarrillo and Paul Katami.
“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to reach so many people through such a distinguished platform as HBO, which is the perfect partner to present the hard work of the many people involved in this case to the rest of the country,” director Ben Cotner said about the project.
The documentary is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
