Biggest Loser Coaches

We got to speak with recently eliminated contestant, Emmy, from last week’s Biggest Loser: The Glory Years about her experience on the show and what she learned.

Over the past 10 years, the Biggest Loser has helped 330 contestants get on track to changing their lives and lifestyle while thousands (dare I say millions) of home viewers have been inspired and have learned some valuable lessons from the 16 seasons watching NBC.

Question: What do you think of the most important thing you learned from being on the show?

Emmy-Eliminated ContestantEmmy Lou Munoz told us…  “I went in with a lot of expectations of what I wanted to learn… when I got there, I knew what I wanted was to take the most out of it…

But I think the biggest thing I learned was you have to have a healthy balance with your food and exercise, you know, and even though it’s healthy food, you know, you could still overdo it. So, I really learned it’s about, you know, really keeping things in balance and really being very conscious of what I put in my body and how much I put in my body.”

Question: How different were your expectations from what the reality was?

Emmy Lou Munoz told us…  “I have watched the show since Season 1, so I was a big fan from the beginning and as far as working out, it really was spot on in what I expected… I expected to… die after that first workout…

As far as the food, I wasn’t sure what to expect that was going to be in our fridges, but I knew it would be healthy but to see the things that were in there, was a real eye-opener to know, what I was doing wrong and what, I could change at home…

So, mainly the food part was what was so different for me, but the workouts, they were exactly what I expected being… [that] I had watched since Season 1…”

Question: What is the hardest thing you had to overcome physically and mentally?

Emmy Lou Munoz told us…  “Physically the hardest thing to overcome was just letting myself…[do it]. Running is really hard for me… physically I didn’t run, I was not a runner in high school, I threw discus, I threw shot put which did not require running…

So I… didn’t do it in high school, I felt like I never could do it. And when I got to the ranch, that was one thing Dolvett liked me to do was run and I couldn’t run more than five – I couldn’t even run a minute when he started…

Overcoming Mental Blocks

… it was just really… just a mental block that I had – that I just kept saying, I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t do it, and again, like I said, I journaled a whole lot and so, I had little quotes that my niece gave me that talks about being an optimist and you know, using the opportunity to the best – to the fullest…

And I was realizing what I was doing and so, you know, physically I just started making myself, you know, I would do the running like they told me and I would take small steps and you know, now, you know, I’m running 5ks and I’m very surprised with that and it’s an awesome feeling.

And mentally, you know, just getting over that block of that I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t do it, that was the biggest thing, just making myself know that I could do it and I needed to try it and you know, that the trainers were to help me, you know, they weren’t going to give me something I just could not do and that was hard for me to let go to know that, you know, I could do it.

But I got past it.”

Question: What is the easiest thing that you’ve been able to adopt for your new and healthy lifestyle?

Emmy Lou Munoz told us…  “The easiest part of it has been the cooking actually. I took a lot of what – recipes I already made at home and you know, with the things that they showed us that were healthy on the ranch, I had incorporated them into making my recipes at home, like we’re big on… I found a recipe or a different recipe that I did and I just completely changed that and cut it by like almost 400 calories…”

Healthy Snacking

Emmy Lou Munoz told us…  “coming home and doing the food part for the kids it was a lot harder but just changing things… incorporating all into our lives so that we could stay healthy.”
