Make sure to stock up on candy and popcorn and get comfy before sitting down for Disney’s Into The Woods. After the first hour you’ll be singing Taylor Swift’s infectious lyrics, “Are we out of the woods yet, are we in the clear?” Despite the film dragging on longer than it should, it’s a perfect Holiday flick for the family. (Especially if you want to silence the kids for couple hours.)
Into The Woods is now playing in theaters!
A magical witch (Meryl Streep) has cast a spell on a Baker and his wife, making it impossible for them to bear children. The evil witch presents the couple one chance to undo the spell: gather a cloak as red as blood, a cow as white as milk, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper of gold. As they travel into the woods (!), they encounter the plots of various Grimm fairy tales. Namely, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Bean Stalk and Rapunzel. A strong theme resonates throughout the film: be careful what you wish for.
Meryl Streep is a worthy witch (we’re not surprised), however her singing was overshadowed by a powerful young Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood and Emily Blunt as the Baker’s wife. While I myself would have recast Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, the role of Chris Pine as Prince Charming was spot on. Perhaps the best in the film.
It’s clear Disney was tasked with translating a popular musical theatre play into film struggling to please both fans of the 1987 production and Holiday families. Those familiar with the story will be pleased with the music and true storyline. Folks unfamiliar with the play will welcome the brilliant comedy and plot twists. Despite the PG rating, parents will surely be chuckling while the kids fantasize over Rapunzel’s insanely long luscious hair. But be warned, there’s no happy ending in this dark Disney fairytale.
