David Oyelowo & Oprah Winfrey star in SELMA, a new movie that tells the story about the march from Selma to Montgomery and how this movement inspired change and the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson.
This movie reminds us all of what it takes to shake loose the ties that oppress people and how much work it takes, people and years of work to push the good fight forward. Inspirational and heart-breaking. It’s a must see reminder of where we were and where we are and where we need to go.
About Selma
Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
