There are those who spend a lifetime achieving great things in life, and then, there are those who spend a lifetime helping show others, through the silver screen, that they, too, can achieve greatness within themselves. Sadly, we’ve lost many of these types of men and women over the ages, and today, another great man has departed. According to news reports this morning, Sir Christopher Lee passed away at the age of 93. He had been hospitalized a few weeks ago with respiratory issues, and was pronounced dead on Sunday morning at 8:30 AM.

Lee was the man who many in this generation knew him as either Saruman from the Lord of The Rings films, or as Count Dooku from Stars Wars, but had started his footprint in cinema history long before. Fans of Lee span among several generations, as some remember him portraying Dracula, Scaramanga (“The Man With The Golden Gun”), or even Sherlock Holmes.

His place in the hearts of moviegoers and cinephiles, worldwide, has stood the test of time, as Lee had no problem playing both sides of the spectrum, from evil villain bent on destroying Middle-Earth, to playing an astute detective in search of an ancient Egyptian necklace.

The man has given so much to the world, beyond film. Lee was a member of the Royal Air Force in 1940, and then joined the Special Forces to help hunt down Nazis. Later in his life, Lee, despite his age, began recording heavy metal albums, appeared on stage, and performed. If you get a chance, check out his “Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing” Christmas album.

Sir Christopher Lee’s impact in this world is one that many have felt, and his works will live on, not only in cinema history, but in the history books, period. His contributions to the world of film, music, and progress, will echo throughout time, and will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
