After months and months of speculations, rumors, theories, and assumptions, we finally get to hear the truth: who the heck is going to play Spider-Man in the M.C.U.? Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today that after many auditions and a worldwide casting search, they have found the person who will step into the role of the Web-Slinger in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters and in IMAX in 2017. Tom Holland, a young English actor known for roles in films such as How I Live Now, The Impossible, and Locke (alongside well-known actor Tom Hardy), will be stepping into the famous  red and blue spandex, and swinging across the silver screen, all over the world. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, the man behind Sundance Film Festival’s thriller this year, Cop Car.

According to Marvel.com, Marvel and Sony Pictures, alongside producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, conducted an all out extensive search for both the actor and director. With impressive resumes, multiple meetings, and successful screen tests, Holland and Watts both met – and exceeded – the criteria for what Feige, Pascal, and the studios were looking for.

After the announcement this morning, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, stated, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.” In regards to Watts being chosen for the director’s chair, Rothman said, “I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon (Watts) is just such an outstanding talent.” Holland, whose exposure to film is somewhat slim, seemed to be a perfect fit for the role, in the eyes of Rothman. “For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige and Pascal also commented on the announcement later this morning. “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers,” Feige mentioned, “we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.” Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin, and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Spider-Man will be swinging into theaters worldwide July 28th, 2017.
