This past Tuesday was elimination night on The Voice, of twelve remaining finalists in Season 10 only ten were saved by America’s votes and the bottom two had to compete one last time for a spot on the Top 11.

The bottom two were Emily Keener of Team Pharrell and Owen Danoff of Team Adam. Emily chose to perform ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,’ a song close to her heart since it is the song her father has played a lot for her in the past. Even though she was praised for her performance on the show and the instant save votes were close, she was eliminated.

Emily was a four chair turn during the blind auditions and the tone of her voice is reminiscence of a different time period, making her unique in the competition. And part of the reason she got so far in the competition.

Now that Emily flies back home, she opens up about her time on The Voice, her favorite moments and what lies ahead in her journey as an artist.

Were you surprised about being voted off?

Yes, I was a little shocked but I’m glad that I was able to go out on a positive note. Everything I did on the show was exactly what I wanted to do. So I’m grateful for that.

What would you say was your favorite part of being on The Voice?

My favorite part of being on The Voice, I think was just the relationship I was able to cultivate with Pharrell, specifically. He just amazed me in so many ways. I went into rehearsal with him, every time I had a conversation with him, I was struck by how genuine and kind he is.

Why did you choose “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” as your instant save song?

I just really wanted to hammer it into people’s heads that I don’t do this to be popular. I could’ve gone with a more modern choice, and that may have been a better strategy in the long run if continuing on the show was my ultimate goal. But really, my ultimate goal on the show was just to show people who I am.

What’s the game plan moving forward in terms of a musical career?

You know writing songs, recording as much as I can.I’m planning to have a new record- a really intense new record- out very soon.

Do you think your time on The Voice will affect the music you make from this point forward?

My time on The Voice has instilled a lot of confidence in me as a performer, specifically. Just the sheer terror of performing in front of millions and millions of people every week is enough to really hammer some conscious into your head.

What was the best piece of advice that Pharrell gave you?

He told me to keep doing what I’m doing.

What was the last thing that Pharrell told you before you left on your plane to go home?

He looked me right in the eye and just- when he looks you in the eye, it’s almost like you can hear what he’s saying to you without him even having to speak.

If you were to go back and tell yourself something while on the show, what would you tell yourself?

I wish I could’ve gone back and told myself not to be nervous or stressed because it’s not any of my business what other people think of me. It’s just my job to create art.

What was the most challenging part about being on The Voice?

The anticipation of the performances themselves. It was just really nerve-wrecking. But I feel like I kept getting stronger week after week, so no regrets on that front.

What was your favorite performance and why?

It’s probably a toss-up between ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ and ‘Lilac Wine’ just because I think those were a couple of the most emotionally charged performances for me.
