Jason Bourne 2016

Jason Bourne is an unnecessary sequel with the main purpose of giving Matt Damon a large pay check. The ‘Bourne’ films have been fan favorites since 2002’s the Bourne identity. It’s clear they don’t care to acknowledge the fourth Jeremy Renner film the Bourne Legacy, which it should have as it is a much better addition to the series. At least Legacy was trying to do something different, but Bourne is the same story we’ve seen already, the only difference is he’s 10 years older, slower and sloppier.

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) first pops up in Greece as he is traveling around the country as a seasoned street fighter who has put his special ops days behind him. Unfortunately, his past just won’t let go. Hacker friend and former Treadstone employee, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), has found some new information that is so pressing that she has to disrupt Bourne’s life one more time. Thanks to Parson’s new intel, he gets entangled with the same organization, this time under the special ops name ‘IRON HAND’. Now he must go on a wild goose chase to find answers to his past, AGAIN.

With the rise of sequels in recent years, someone at Universal studios thought it necessary to dust off the Bourne series, and reunite some of the original players Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, and director Paul Greengrass. However, they aren’t enough to save this film from being repetitive bore. New additions to the series agent Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), and ‘Iron Hand’ Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones), are two characters who are wasted in this silly, frivolous plot.

One thing that is particularly upsetting about Jason Bourne is throughout the movie, we see him dealing with the harsh symptoms of post-traumatic stress. This is due to his detachment from the Treadstone program. Instead of exploring that in depth, the film delivers shaky-cam fight scenes, expensive collateral damage, and the dialogue so laughable you’d think you were watching a comedy. Bourne ends up making so many mistakes that he normally wouldn’t make that you end up pitying him. Why would writers Paul Greengrass, and Christopher Rouse want to ruin such a sharp character in such a sloppy, dismissive manner?
Jason Bourne is the fifth installment no one asked for and is by far the worst of the series. Everyone looks worn out and it seems like no one really wants to be in this movie. With a $120 million dollar budget, I expected Paul Greengrass to explore some new avenues, special effects, new angles, SOMETHING! But he’s too lazy to come up with anything interesting or innovative. Since the old formula worked, why change it, right?

More about Jason Bourne – starring Matt Damon #Bourne

Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, once again joins Damon for the next chapter of Universal Pictures’ Bournefranchise, which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.

For Jason Bourne, Damon is joined by Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones, while Julia Stiles reprises her role in the series. Frank Marshall again produces alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment, and Greengrass, Damon, Gregory Goodman and Ben Smith also produce. Based on characters created by Robert Ludlum, the film is written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse.
