Apocalyptic Fantasy WE ARE THE FLESH

First and foremost, this is not a movie for the weak of heart. “We Are The Flesh” is the Spanish language feature debut of director, Emiliano Rocha Minter. The movie begins in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world. Brother (Diego Gamaliel) and sister (Maria Evoli) find refuge in a beaten up filthy apartment. The apartment is inhabited by a dirty vagabond (Noe Hernandez). He offers to feed the siblings and let them live with him as long as they do as he says. His intentions are soon rifled with grotesque requests including incest and cannibalism.

I suppose the film is a metaphor and study on humanity and civilization in the most grotesque and gruesome way possible. “We Are The Flesh” will appeal to a very niche audience, one that loves shock cinema. The film is full of graphic sex scenes, rape, sadism, torture and even menstruation fetishism. While this film is not my cup of tea, I will say that it is strangely and uncomfortably hypnotic, which was probably part of the point. The siblings slowly turn the crumbling rooms into a womb-like sanctuary, built with tape and cardboard.

Already this film is getting a lot of buzz for being the ultimate shock-fest this year. Minter definitely went full force and made the movie he wanted to and I give him a lot of credit for that. This is probably one of the hardest films to watch and get through, but if your into crazy psychedelic orgy fueled urine fests, then definitely go see “We Are The Flesh.”

More about “We Are the Flesh” in Theaters January 17th

A visionary and bizarre slice of Mexican arthouse cinema, We Are The Flesh is an extraordinary and unsettling film experience, a sexually charged and nightmarish journey into an otherworldy dimension of carnal desire and excess, as well as a powerful allegory on the corrupting power of human desire. A young brother and sister, roaming an apocalyptic city, take refuge in the dilapidated lair of a strange hermit. He puts them to work building a bizarre cavernous structure, where he acts out his insane and depraved fantasies. Trapped in this maddening womb-like world under his malign influence, they find themselves sinking into the realms of dark and forbidden behaviour. Acclaimed by the Oscar-winning Mexican directors of The Revenant and Gravity, and playing to rave reviews and stunned audiences at genre film festivals around the world, We Are The Flesh is that rare beast – an intelligent, beautifully-crafted film that is also provocative and deeply disturbing.
