Fox has made quite the name for themselves when it comes to the Marvel properties that they own, and not in a good way. From multiple timelines created for their X-Men franchise, to the debacle in post-editing process for the underwhelming and chaotic Fantastic Four reboot…reboot. It wasn’t until 2016 when it seemed that Fox was finally opening its eyes to the cries and pleas from fans worldwide, and gave them what they wanted: a really good Marvel interpretation.

It was a little over a year ago today that fans roared in agreement over the raunchy yet hilarious film about the Merc with a mouth: Deadpool. The idea that Fox was finally seeing eye-to-eye with the people who have been pleading for a proper Marvel film from them was overwhelming. So when news came that Fox wanted to do a final Wolverine film to close out the wild animal from Canada’s franchise. The thing is, even with the success of Deadpool, fans were uncertain as to whether or not this would be the pièce de résistance of the Wolverine saga, or its coup de grâce.

Logan, by far, is one of the best films to come out of the X-Men film franchise. After 17 years of donning the adamantium claws, Hugh Jackman gives his final and best performance as the Animal in this incredible action and emotionally packed wild ride! In the near future, a weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) at a remote outpost on the Mexican border. His attempt to hide from the outside world gets upended when X introduces him to a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen). Logan must now protect the girl and battle the dark forces that want to capture her.

Directed by James Mangold, the man behind 2013’s The Wolverine, this film is not your typical Marvel film that many have become accustomed to. There’s no airport action sequence, or battle atop the Statue of Liberty; this film creates a tale like no other. Taking inspiration from the popular Marvel storyline Old Man Logan, the film unloads the emotional aspect of the aging adamantium warrior in a world without heroes. Mangold releases the Wolverine’s inner soul on screen for all to see, and it’s beautiful. Obviously, he couldn’t utilize everything from the famous storyline’s pages, as the rights to many of the characters were not available. But the director does what he does best: he adapts the resource material to suit the needs of the project. And that is what Mangold does; he took the story that fans love, and created a film that the fans will still appreciate and love.

In creating the cap for the Wolverine universe, Mangold divulges to the fans early on that this film will be rated R. Within 5 minutes, you are witness to several body parts getting cut off, with the casual profanity interlaced eloquently in Logan’s dialogue. This, however, doesn’t take away from the characters or their development in the film. The film sits at around 2 hours long, and it’s a slow burner, as the story spends more time gaining momentum rather than establishing it right away. This, however, is its hidden weapon: the time it gives fans to invest in each character lays a new love for the characters we’ve known for a long time.

Hugh Jackman: the man that embodied the role of the Wolverine since 2000. To go into that theater knowing that this was going to be the final performance of Jackman in this role was crushing. I was a huge Wolverine fan with the comics, and to see this Aussie actor nail the role, and continue to portray him better and better with each appearance, was so exciting for me. So now that the fact that this film will be his last is heartbreaking, as a fan. But Jackman doesn’t disappoint, and gives his greatest performance as the Wolverine. True in action and heart, he again shows the world why the Wolverine character was made for him.

The film, overall, is perfect. It creates a perfect three-act performance that surpasses many other Marvel films, giving viewers a true farewell to the Wolverine. I’m not going to lie, I cried several times throughout the film. Not because of what happens, but because of how it the scene is beautifully constructed: the well-placed dialogue, the incredible delivery, and the outstanding music. This film will convert uncertain moviegoers right away, and create new fans for the franchise that no longer will be. I am excited to see Logan again when it debuts March 3rd, and will be first in line, with my ticket, ready to see the Animal one last time, and give my final goodbye.
