Tim Allen jumped into the Trump controversy of his character. Even Allen and the producers are on opposite sides on whether his character Mike Baxter will vocally be a Trump supporter. Allen loves to “piss people off” and he wants people to know his character doesn’t share his views, his analogy of Keanu Reeves didn’t murder hundreds of people, John Wick did.

Showrunner, Kevin Abbot commented on the Roseanne reboot comparisons and how LMS looks to follow that success ratings-wise. The show’s new home on FOX is looking to take it away from the controversy of the week formula and simply focus on a family story.

The question of the missing daughters arose. Molly Ephraim who played Mandy won’t be coming back. The show’s recasting of the character isn’t ready to be announced even though the show goes into production next week [UPDATE BELOW]. The other Baxter daughter, Kaitlyn, will be coming in when she’s available. Masterson’s on-screen son Boyd will also be recast to a younger actor in order to tell stories about a 12yr old growing up.

In the show, Nancy Travis character Vanessa will bring in a foreign exchange student character. One who hails from Germany.

Allen talked about dangling plots from when the show ran on ABC. Much of it was talk about episodes prepared for a Hilary Clinton presidency. When Trump took the election everything the show had was thrown out the window.

One of the episodes fans will see in the return season will consist of short vignettes that tell what happened to these characters in the year it was off the air.

Most of Last Man Standings most notable moments were winks to Tim Allen’s previous sitcom, Home Improvement. According to Abbot, the audience will get more of that when the right script presents itself. Though Home Improvement isn’t the only nod the show’s star wants. Tim Allen has been leaning on Tom Hanks to do a Buzz/Woody nod and wants other people to pressure him on social media as well. He also mentioned Toy Story 4 as being really really great.

UPDATE: Fox post-TCA announced the recasting of Mandy Baxter, actress Molly McCook (The Ranch) will take over the role vacated by Molly Ephraim. Additionally, Black-ish guest star Jet Jurgensmeyer will be taking over the role of Mike’s grandson Boyd in order to tell different stories with the character.

Last Man Standing will return to a new home on the Fox network September 28, 2018
