Scare LA doesn’t think you should have to and offers Summerween, a Halloween in the Summer! Scare LA started in 2013 wanting to capture the true spirit of Halloween along with thousands of Halloween fans by offering haunted attractions, meet and greets with top horror film professionals, classes, industry panels, cosplay parties, incredibly unique merchandise and of course, tons of spine-tingling tableaux, perfect for those Instagram photo ops.

Red Carpet Report’s Entertainment Journalist, Jennifer Ortega, attended the dark convention/spooky pop-up theme park with Fashion Blogger, Stacey Gilman. They were curious to see how Halloween in 90 degree weather would hold up. Scare LA took place August 25th-26th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The first thing we noticed when walking in was fog, lots and lots of fog. There must have been hidden smoke machines all over the place. It definitely set the mood from the onset. As we heading into the convention hall we were greeted by a heavy metal band dressed in costumes and face paint. Two guests dressed as a 50’s silver robot and a giant eyeball robot danced along.

Inside the hall there were plenty of attractions. There was a ghost train, a pop up haunted house, a funhouse from hell scare maze and dark gameplay presented by Escape to Virtual Reality. If you prefer live theatre there was dark poetry, ghoulish magic and even a zombie ballet. There were guest appearances and autograph sessions with Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Jake Busey (The Predator) and Ve Neill (Face Off). For the night owls there was Scare LA Summerween Dark Domain Costume Party where you can party with fellow monsters until midnight.

What we enjoyed the most was the exhibitor booths. It was like being at a ghostly shopping mall full of talented artists, merchants and killer clowns. Raul Contreras impressed us with his beautifully illustrated book, Alice’s Bloody Adventures in Wonderland. It is a wonderfully twisted retelling of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and a permanent book in the Lewis Caroll libraries of Oxford, Princeton and USC. Echo Park mainstay, Memento Mori was there with a delightful array of creepy curios from their store. We loved Dirty Lola’s one of a kind antique plates that owner Scarlett River adorns with portraits of Frankenstein, Robert Smith, Beetlejuice and many more. Samantha that runs Rotten Glam showed us goodies for the dark at heart. Jennifer loved the Mi Vida Loca pins and Pennywise earrings.

Some other standouts were The Pretty Cult with their tarot tees, Crypt Relics that offer delicate animal skeletons and Dr. Hogan-Berry’s Extraordinary Emporium where Debbie Hogan creates the cutest charm bracelets for almost every fandom. Stacey was impressed by the booth helmed by ROTN (Revenge of the Nerd) and Loudmouth Threads. Both brands have very original concepts and are fashion forward. ROTN makes shirts that combine a hybrid of comic books and punk rock bands and Loudmouth Threads gives an edgy, unique take on Stephen King, The Shining and Alien in his clothing and patches.

It turns out Summerween does really work! LA Scare is must for anyone that loves Halloween or monster fare. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.
