During Thursday’s PlayStation 5 reveal, many questions were answered while some were left for “this summer”. Among the biggest things we now know is what the actual console will look like.

Design

Much of its visual design is in line with the PSVR headset. Departing from the solid black box look of previous systems, the PlayStation 5 is a radical choice and looks like something that should be controlling your home temperature or turning on your lights when you’re not there. It appears as though the system’s indicator lights will glow between the white casing which should be a welcome move if you’re like me and leave the console on while you’re sleeping only to be startled by the light show in the far side of your bedroom.

Two Systems

The other big reveal was that PS5 will come in two versions. A standard PlayStation 5 system and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. So far the only difference is the “Digital Edition” will not have a built in 4k UHD Disc Drive. Sony has manufactured the digital edition for the market looking to move to fully stream/download content.

A Range of Accessories

Sony first-party accessories were also shown for the system. The DualSense controller with haptic feedback and built-in microphone had been the only thing shown up until yesterday. During the reveal Sony revealed the system would have a dock charging station for the controller (capable of charging 2 at once), Pulse 3D wireless audio headset, a media remote which also features a button that looks as if it controls the television as well, and perhaps the cutest accessory a tiny taco looking HD Camera.

The camera’s design looks like a tiny PS5. While Sony didn’t give specifics regarding the use of VR on the PS5, the company’s philosophy of next-gen upgrading means everything gets boosted. This new stereo HD camera will be a 1920×1080 resolution meaning a slightly better picture quality for streaming but most importantly un upgrade in VR sensor tracking. Sony has said current PSVR headsets will still work on PS5.

What We Still Don’t Know…

Sony remains committed to releasing the system this year, though no price or date was given. Several games shown have holiday 2020 launch windows which at the very least means the launch catalog will have variety. There’s still a lot of information to release regarding the PlayStation 5, at the top of the list being:

  • -Price
  • -Release Date
  • -Pricing of accessories including extra DualSense Controllers
  • -How PS Now service will integrate
  • -Backward compatibility with PS4 games.
