What would you pay to watch the new Mulan film in the comfort of your own home?

UPDATE: An investor call at Disney clarified the terms of Mulan on Disney+. Those who purchase the film via streaming service for $29.99 will have it as part of their library for the duration of their Disney+ subscription. When you renew your subscription the rental will still be part of the library. No word on if those who let their subscription lapse then come back will still have access to the film.

Mulan will premiere on Disney+ on September 4 “on a premiere access basis” for $29.99. That’s for rental, not purchase, and on top of the fee existing Disney+ customers already pay for the streaming service.

In countries that do not have Disney+, the film will be made available in cinemas.

Mulan is just one of many films to be impacted by COVID-19 as it’s seen two of its release dates get pushed back. Disney is not currently looking at this as a new business model but only just a one-off.

$29.99 is in some cases one and a half general movie ticket admissions and its likely Disney is basing that price on not watching this movie solo. As we don’t know when it will be safe to go into movie theaters again, more studios may have to sell their major 2020 releases in this way in order to turn the financial bleeding into a drip. $29.99 is a steep price to watch a movie even if it’s with an entire family, but in all honesty, I’d probably pay that to watch Black Widow at home.
