During the NBC Winter Press Tour panel for Young Rock, show executive producers Nahnatchka Khan, Jeff Chiang and Dwayne Johnson shared a lot of details regarding the new NBC comedy chronicling the developmental years of Johnson’s life growing up.

Fans will get a deep and vulnerable look at watermark times in the life of the entertainment giant’s life as Adrian Groulx plays Johnson at the impressionable age of 10, Bradley Constant is DJ entering high school age, and Uli Latukefu takes on the part of Rock during his time playing football at the University of Miami. During the panel, Khan and Johnson talked about how the show’s story is a positive showcase for minorities growing up in mixed-race families. While the show has outrageous characters and centers around the life of Dwayne Johnson, producers wanted to show to feel authentic and relatable to people who don’t see themselves in normal situations on TV.

One of the draws for wrestling fans (other than seeing The Rock) is the number of iconic names from the 80’s and 90’s fans will get to see portrayed in the show including Joseph Lee Anderson playing Dwayne Johnson’s late father wrestling superstar “Soulman” Rocky Johnson. We won’t spoil the giant names in the pilot but during the press tour, Khan mentioned we’ll see even more in later episodes including a portrayal of Macho Man Randy Savage on screen.

Young Rock premieres February 16 @8PM on NBC
