Sony has dropped a whirlwind of announcements today in regards to the near future and the long term. On PS Blog, Senior VP Hideaki Nishino detailed Sony’s plan the next generation of PlayStation VR.

Currently, PSVR on PS5 is a backward compatibility feature, Nishino announced a new PSVR system is in development coming to PlayStation 5. In the post, he mentions two key features of development. A new ergonomic controller based on Dualsense controller tech, the other being a single cord setup. The plan is to have the PS5 system do all the processing, thus eliminating the need for the server farm’s worth of cabling the current system relies on. This new PSVR system is currently officially unnamed and won’t be launching in 2021. PlayStation’s current focus is getting the PS5 hardware manufactured to meet rabid consumer demand as component shortages affect not only gaming but nearly every industry.

In an interview with UK GQ, CEO of Sony Interactive Jim Ryan talked more about the new PSVR hardware but also answered questions about PlayStation in 2021. While we will see Horizon: Forbidden West in 2021, it was mentioned that Gran Turismo 7 is experiencing pandemic-related delays and currently the plan is to push that game into 2022 with an official statement about the release date to be made later. In the interview, Ryan also noted the next game to make the leap from PlayStation console to PC would be Days Gone.

Speaking of the ongoing pandemic, last year Sony was among many entertainment giants helping keep the public in their homes via content by giving away games. On March 1, the Play @ Home returns with four months of offers beginning with players being able to download Insomniac Games PS4 Ratchet & Clank (2016) for free even if you aren’t a PlayStation Plus member. The game will be made totally free from March 1-31. More games and offers will be announced in the weeks to come.
