The long-awaited first footage of the new animated feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted during the first day of NYCC on Nintendo Direct.

The film produced in partnership with Nintendo and Illumination features an invincible star cast of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru).

During the Nintendo Direct presentation, both Chris Pratt and Jack Black appeared to tell fans about their excitement about working on this movie. Though oddly, Pratt who voices the main character seemed weirdly aloof, and in the brief moments we hear Mario’s voice in the trailer it definitely isn’t him doing a Charles Martinet impression. The best parts of this first trailer was seeing just how big of a villain Bowser is going to be and hearing Jack Black come up with a voice exceptionally well suited to the character and vibe of the movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be in theaters April 2023 hopefully not far from the opening of the Nintendo themed land coming to Universal Studios Hollywood next year.
