Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.

This summer, DreamWorks Animation presents a lively action comedy that takes place in the tumultuous waters of high school, featuring a timid teenager who discovers she’s a part of a mythic lineage of sea krakens. As she learns that her destiny is larger than she ever imagined, she’ll have to confront the immediate problem of a power-hungry mermaid who’s taken an interest in her school.

Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise), a sweet and introverted 16-year-old, desires to fit in at Oceanside High but feels largely invisible. Her crush is a skater-boy who appreciates her math abilities, and her overprotective mother forbids her from swimming with the cool kids at the beach. However, everything changes when Ruby breaks her mother’s rule and finds out that she’s a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens, destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.

The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans from power-hungry mermaids, who’ve been in a long-standing battle with the Kraken. But things get more complicated when the school’s new, popular girl Chelsea (Emmy winner Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek) is discovered to be a mermaid. Ruby must learn to embrace her destiny and protect her loved ones.

The cast includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ruby’s supportive father, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson (Veep) as Ruby’s enthusiastic uncle, and Blue Chapman (Council of Dads) as her cool younger brother. Directed by Academy Award® nominee Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods) and produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), with Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour) as co-director, the film features a strong supporting cast, including Emmy nominees Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) and Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), YouTube Diamond creator Liza Koshy (Liza on Demand), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), and Echo Kellum (Arrow).
