With over 10 million global book sales, Junji Ito (Black Paradox, Tomie) is one of the most revered creators western audiences may have never heard of. His work in manga is unmatched for being skillfully grotesque, seamlessly weaving the unknowable into cosmic horrors that exceed the boundaries of medium. Junji Ito was a special guest of San Diego Comic-Con 2023 where he received a long overdue Inkpot award. For those who don’t know, the Inkpot is given to individuals for their contributions to the worlds of comics, science fiction/fantasy, film, television, animation, and fandom services.

At SDCC 2023, Viz media hosted not only panels celebrating the legendary creator but also a special gallery exhibit showcasing his mind-bending history lesson of art that defines Japanese horror. Check out the photos and more from the Ito-verse.

As a longtime fan of Junji Ito’s work, seeing the over 100 art pieces from works that terrified and encapsulated readers was one of the most transcendent Comic-Con experiences in the show’s 50 year history. It’s a moment that encapsulates what SDCC is truly about…celebrating the visual arts.
