The ambitious sci-fi drama, Megalopolis, has found a home and will be distributed by Lionsgate Studios in the U.S. and Canada following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

Coppola’s $120 million epic, financed independently by Coppola himself, will be released theatrically and will also receive an IMAX release on September 27, 2024.

In the film, Adam Driver stars as Cesar, an artist-inventor with dreams of a utopian metropolis at odds with the city’s mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). It co-stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.

Through the hit and miss cinema year 2024 has been, we’ve seen ambitious projects such as Furiosa fail to meet expectations. It will be interesting to see whether audiences turn out for Megalopolis considering how much director, Francis Ford Coppola, has himself financed on the film along with the accusations of his unprofessional behavior on set.

Thus far, reactions to the film from its festival screening have been mixed with some praising its bold experimental production while others have others have criticized its story.
