It was a supernatural night at the PaleyFest with cast and creators of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals showing up to a packed house of fans wanting to know more about their favorite series on the CWTV channel.
On again – off again
Fans really want to know what’s up with Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) relationship as they ended their relationship but then hooked up again… are they destined for an undead life together? Executive producer Julie Plec shared some insight into their relationship as well as how it’s decided who “lives” or “dies” in the series.
Will there be Elena and Damon or Elena and Stefan? Time will tell….
“Damon and Elena recognize all the different elements of the codependency of their relationship… And if those conversations continually end up in sex, then they’re eventually going to have to have a conversation about that too. We just want to play them as human as possible despite their inhuman experience.”
About the Life or Death of Characters
“Not to be glib, but most new characters are created to die… Their death and their return can be earned by a lot of things: A fandom that really doesn’t want to let go of a character, a writer or team of writers who don’t want to let go of a character, a story where someone’s death and resurrection actually plays into the overall narrative, and, occasionally, when someone wants to leave the show and you’ve got to let them go.” Cool – they listen to the fans – that’s important!
Other questions fans asked…
Will Caroline (Candice Accola) be moved to a more permanent role in “The Originals” to be with Klaus (Joseph Morgan)? “…Caroline Forbes is such a crucial, crucial element as a sparkly personality, as a beautiful soul, as a fascinating character on ‘The Vampire Diaries,’” said Plec. “And I think taking her off that show would be very damaging to the show whether or not we want to see these two together.”
What about Claire Holt (Rebekah from “The Originals)? Why is she gone? Fans heard it from her at the panel: “I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that these incredibly talented writers did not run out of story,” Holt said. “I wasn’t pushed out, I didn’t quit midseason. This was something that we discussed from the start and I completed my initial commitment and I made a life choice not a career choice.” The real question is – will she be coming back for some cameo appearances? We hope so.
