The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2018 were announced tonight during the 71st Annual DGA Awards at the Hollywood & Highland Center’s Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. Alfonso Cuarón won the DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for Roma.

“The language of cinema, like the universe, is constantly expanding,” said Cuaron, whose keenly observed Netflix feature depicts the life of a Mexico City domestic worker in 1970-71. “The true cinema ignores walls, both real and imagined. More than 11 million domestic workers are migrants. When we vilify them, call them criminals and rapists, we minimize ourselves.”

About the Directors Guild of America
In the more than 80 years since its founding in 1936, the DGA has fought for the economic and creative rights of its members; protected their ability to financially benefit from the reuse of their work; established strong pension and health plans; and established jurisdiction in new technologies and distribution platforms. Today we represent more than 17,500 directors and members of the directorial team working in film, television, commercials, new media and other audiovisual media. https://www.dga.org
