With the series finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend just around the corner, a hot topic of Wednesday night’s 2019 PaleyFest panel was — what’s next for the show? In the era of reboots, movies, and other streaming possibilities, the audience was curious where show creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna would go next with the series.

Viewers can breathe a sigh of relief because there does seem to be a second life for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend after the show ends. Besides the variety show of songs from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at Radio City Music Hall in May, Bloom revealed that a Broadway show is something she would like to tackle next.

“There are two separate things. There is us performing together, which is what Radio City is and everyone here is going to be involved in Radio City,” she explained. “Then there’s the idea of a stage musical, which is kind of a different idea and it’s something Aline and I have only started to talk about.”

The stage show wouldn’t detour from the story fans fell in love with over four seasons. It would hold true to what they’ve seen on TV.

“I’m 95% sure it will be a retelling of the same story,” Bloom shared.

Brosh McKenna added, “Producers have asked if we are going to write all new songs for the Broadway thing. I was like, ‘WHAT?'”

“Why would we write a sequel when we have a show that we can just copy?” Bloom laughed. “I don’t want to have to work ever again.”

“It’s a 55-hour musical,” Brosh McKenna summed up.

It does seem that the talented duo is very serious about adapting Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for the stage. In the meantime, the live performances will have to tide fans over until Bloom and Brosh McKenna are ready for the next step.

“For now, we have these live performances as a cast and what’s really fun for me is that we’ve allowed the freedom we found on set to be put on the stage with these songs,” concluded Bloom.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s series finale airs Friday, April 5 on The CW
