72nd Emmy Awards: Jimmy Kimmel Opening Monologue

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were anything but predictable. Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the show at the Staples Center in Los Angles without an audience and the show swiftly moved into Schitt’s Creek’s unprecedented winning streak.

The cast and crew swept the seven major comedy categories — Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Writing and Directing. The Schitt’s Creek party became the “Schitt’s Sweep” party — a pun dubbed by FOX Good Day LA reporter Amanda Salas.

For fans looking for a Schitt’s Creek movie, co-creator Dan Levy is uncertain about that for now.

“This is the best way we could have ever ended the show,” he said in the virtual press room. “It [the movie idea] has to be really freaking good.”

“I hope there’s a movie, I need a job,” piped in his co-star Karen Robinson.

The second half of the show began with John Oliver winner Outstanding Variety Talk Series for Last Week Tonight and Regina King winning for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Watchmen.

“It is a little confusing as to why the Emmys are happening this year,” John Oliver said in his backstage interview. However, the Emmys offered plenty of surprises with the show broadcasting from 114 different locations. From inviting frontline workers to present the categories to the fast pace of the show, the pandemic wasn’t the worst thing to happen to the Emmys.

It was fun to see nominees surrounded by friends and family like Jennifer Aniston’s Friends reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Courtney Cox or Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon’s 2021 New Year’s Eve party — celebrities are also ready to put 2020 to bed.

Social justice was not forgotten during the ceremony with King and Uzo Aduba both wearing Breonna Taylor shirts, and Anthony Anderson taking the time to talk about Blacks Lives Matters before he presented his award.

“I love being a Black woman, I love being a Black girl, I love being American, and it’s important that people see all those things together,” said King to the press. “When you have the platform to remind those who tend to forget Black girls, Black women. When you have a moment to celebrate, you take it.”

Also leading the way was Zendaya, who, at the age of 24, became the youngest person to win for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria. She reminded everyone that Gen Z and Millennials are doing meaningful work out there in the streets.

“I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating,” she said in her acceptance speech. “But I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people. And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”

Giving Back

The Emmys also served as a fundraiser for No Kid Hungry and raised over $2.8 million. It’s a reminder that Hollywood can rise to the occasion during hard times to not only help others but to also shake up a dusty award show format. Let’s hope some of these changes stick around for the next ceremony once COVID-19 makes its exit.
