The one thing I hope we don’t lose coming out of this 2020 panorama is good party games that bring people together virtually. Whether it was zoom trivia, Jackbox, and more; games that allowed people to play together over video without needing controllers became the fun way of doing virtual happy hour. While it might be late to the game, What The Dub?! combines party game and bad movie night for a fun but short eperience.

In What The Dub?! six players using their phones will replace dialogue in clips of old B-movies, infomercials, training videos, and more with new words read out loud by a speech recognition bot. Another six players can vote on who had the best dialogue replacement. Once you get past the initial urge to simply use dick and fart jokes the game becomes a contest of trying to figure out the best lines to coerce voting your way. It really helps to know the humor those voting enjoy.

With over 300 clips in game to play, we never encountered the same clip twice in the near hour playing What The Dub?! After about the tenth game the charm did start to wear thin. That’s really the weird thing about this game, it’s mechanically solid, great old theater visual skin, and a terrific score by an Emmy nominated composer. The flaw of the game is by its own design there’s only so much of it you can play.

The low $7-8 price (depending on platform) and ability to play zoom streaming over tablets, phones, or a PC makes it a solid addition to your virtual box social entertainment library. Though it’s short, the fun factor experienced by you and your friends before feeling the need to move on is more than the price you’ll pay for What The Dub?! and that makes it a solid win.
