This year’s Emmy ceremony, broadcast on NBC on August 25th, 2014, was perhaps most notable for its lack of surprises. But Seth Myers was an affable host whose jokes, for the most part, landed solidly, and it was fun to see actors more traditionally known for their appearances on the big screen mixing it up with the television folk.

Instead of big surprises, what made the show enjoyable were the small moments of good-humored interplay between attendees, some choice one-liners that made the audience chuckle and the warm feeling that seemed to pervade the auditorium as the TV community came together to celebrate their own. And of course, some of the more personal stories shared backstage after the winners walked off with their golden statues.

Even after I hit “erase” on my DVR, here are some of the highlights that will stick with me from this year’s show.

–Seth Myers making fun of the networks throwing an award show where all the awards go to shows on cable and Netflix.

–My talent crush, Allison Janney, winning her 2nd Emmy within a week. I was lucky enough to witness her first win at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony on Saturday, August 16th, when she took home the statue for Guest Actress in a Drama for the role of ‘Margaret Scully’ in Masters of Sex. It was a treat to once again watch her head up to the stage to accept an award for her work, this time in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her work on Mom. She’s one of those actresses who makes me laugh and cry in the same breath, and her chat in the press room shed some light on her versatility.

When asked about how she balances drama and comedy, she said that she had received great training in the theater. While at Kenyon College, she would jump right from doing a comedy like A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum to a dramatic Michael Cristofer play, each requiring different emotional and physical needs. She also told us that she grew up dancing and figure skating, which gave her great control over her body. She said tries not to qualify the work that she does as being either comedy or drama. While technically a comedy, Mom deals with some very serious topics, and Masters of Sex has moments of great humor. It’s all about “just bringing the reality under the imaginary circumstances and having fun.”

–While we’re on the subject of fashion, a shout out to Hayden Panettiere, who looked fantastic in her sparkly Lorena Sarbu gown that made the most of her baby bump.

–I hate that I need to even mention that it was a great year for women at the Primetime Emmys, but it’s still notable when women win multiple writing and directing awards. Congratulations to Gail Mancuso (Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series – Modern Family, “Vegas”), Sarah Silverman (Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special – Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles) and Moira Walley-Beckett (Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series – Breaking Bad, “Ozymandias”).

When speaking to reporters, Mancuso said that she hoped that seeing someone like herself win a Directing Emmy would help to normalize the situation and make young girls think about the fact that they can be behind the camera and not just in front of it.

I also got a kick out of how during her acceptance speech, Mancuso remained in director mode, telling one of the camera men to get out of the way so that they could show the people she was in the midst of thanking on screen.

–Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston’s running joke about his appearance on Seinfeld was one of the funnier bits of the evening. When they appeared together as presenters, she said he reminded her of an actor who appeared on the sitcom and played her love interest dentist Tim Whatley…the joke, of course, being that he actually played the role. The two bantered back and forth, with Louis-Dreyfus never admitting she remembered him. With all of the accolades he’s received for his role on Breaking Bad, sometimes it’s hard to remember that before Cranston took on the role of Walter White, he was nominated multiple times for his turn as “Hal” on Malcolm in the Middle. But tonight was a good reminder, as his comedic timing was on full display. Louis-Dreyfus’s win for Lead Actress in a Comedy allowed she and Cranston to complete the third part of the bit, as he laid one on her after her name was called. Later in the press room, when asked about the lip lock, he quipped, “Well, I think it’s not a question of why, but more a question of why not?”

–Movie stars can make fun of themselves, too. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were good sports as many from the stage commented on their unusual appearance at the Emmys. And then the two of them continued with the teasing as they made fun of one another while presenting the award for Best Lead Actor in a TV movie or miniseries. “So you won the Oscar, the Sexiest Man Alive and now you want the Emmy, too?” Harrelson said. “Isn’t that a little bit greedy?”

–Chris Hardwick schooling Internet trolls on the difference between “your” and “you’re.” Grammar nerds unite!

–When asked about how she was going to celebrate her win, Kathy Bates said she might sneak off to dinner with Melissa McCarthy and her husband. I’d like to request a seat at that dinner table.

–Juliana Margulies’ dig at cable and Netflix series when she specifically mentioned the writers on The Good Wife “who never cease to amaze me with 22 episodes a year.” I’m a platform agnostic TV junkie, but I do think that the shows that manage to sustain excellence across 22 episodes, rather than 10 or 13, deserve a special bit of recognition.
